Survival Search Plan

EBSCO Host is a searchable magazine database that provides the full text of 780 journals and summaries of thousands more.  The full text magazines date back to January, 1990.  You can also  search Magill Book Reviews and Essential Documents in American History - a database containing over 1,000 original historical documents.

Use this tutorial to master the commands necessary to be a skilled EBSCO Host searcher.  To survive you will need to meet the following challenges:

  • Identify the best keywords, synonyms, and alternate word forms to search within your topic.

  • Design a  search plan using Boolean operators, phrase searching, truncation, and field areas.

  • Correct your spelling, using a dictionary if necessary.  Remember, the Internet does not include a spell checker!

  • Practice real EBSCO searching by accepting our EBSCO Challenge.

The links below navigate you through the tutorial.  In each section, the tutorial features specific EBSCO Host searching options and furnishes practice exercises.  Work the links from the top down to master the necessary survivor skills.

Survival Aids:  Notice that good results depend on an effective search strategy.  Throughout the site, look for helpful hints:
