Search Strategy

Step 1

  1. Highlight or underline key search terms in your assignment.
  2. Assignment example: “using genetically modified foods in the environment”
  3. Search terms = “genetically modified “, foods, environment, uses
  4. Think of appropriate synonyms for key terms
  5. Search term synonyms = technique(s), process(es), application(s), pros and cons, controversy, outlook, opinion, future, frankenfoods, genetically engineered, etc.
  6. Choose the following databases from the NCS Upper School Library Web site.

Step 2 CQ Researcher

This is the best online database to begin your search. The articles are comprehensive, running to about 25 pages in length. They provide overview, background, outlook, pros and cons and technical information.

  1. After clicking on CQ Researcher, click on “ Browse by Topic ” or enter 2 search terms in the Quick Search box...
  2. Click on The folder icon by the letter “G”. Click on “Genetic Engineering”.
  3. Click on the topic that pertains to your assignment.
  4. Copy and paste appropriate pages, passages, etc.
  5. Make sure that you cite all ideas, quotations, paragraphs, etc.
  6. Click on Noodletools.com at http://www.ncslibrary.org . Create a folder. Choose MLA Starter and the drop-down box to add cites and create a bibliography.

Step 3 SIRS

This full-text database includes magazine and newspaper articles that pertain to your topic. Click on Advanced search and type search terms that are pertinent to your topic. The Boolean operator word and is already supplied.

Example: biotech foods and dangers
frankenfoods and controversy
genetically engineered foods and uses
