What does the future hold?

Because of the advent of ebooks and the proliferation of increasingly reliable educational content available online, many educators are reconceptualizing the textbook.

What is a Textbook in the 21st Century

The Future of the Book. from IDEO on Vimeo.

Emerging Trends

Digital text has changed the way we read, particularly on the Internet. When text was made digital, it became instantly searchable and scalable. You can copy entire novels posted online and paste them into a Word document if you so chose.

As the Internet has become such a central part of our lives, it influences how we choose to access information. We no longer want static texts, but rather texts that we can interact with, share, reassemble, with multimedia features including video, text and more.

Barriers to Adoption

There are many barriers to implementing an ebook program at this time.

  • Limitations put in place by publishers
  • Digital divide exists between the haves and have nots
  • Not all formats work across multiple platforms
  • You can't purchase used ebooks
  • Digital textbooks often include many enhanced features including homework management systems, video-capture for lectures; all of these features have pedagogical implications
