The Upper School Library uses a course-integrated approach to bibliographic and electronic instruction for students in grades 7 to 12. All seventh graders, however, receive a six day unit in basic bibliographic and electronic searching that includes lessons using:

Subsequent library instruction is integrated into various librarian-designed course assignments in English, History, Foriegn Language, and Science. Students are introduced to additional assignment-related electronic resources, reference materials and monographs and suitable Internet sites, and other electronic libraries.

The concepts stressed in each course integrated unit are universal to all types of libraries. Our goal is to teach students to:

  • Acquire appropriate Information
  • Organize and apply it at relevent times
  • Critically evaluate information sources
  • Use information effectively to successfully complete all assignments

Bibliographies and Reading Lists
The library regualrly prepares a variety of special subject bibliographies and reading lists. Summer, Spring Break, Christmas and Thanksgiving reading lists give some good ideas for pleasure reading. Others are prepared for your classes. Check out our bulletin board, display areas, or online for what's new and help yourself.

Booktalks
The Librarians give regularly scheduled booktalks to seventh graders and homeroom visits can be arranged for Upper School students to recieve a basket of "readable goodies."

Courier Service
NCSU students may borrow books from the NCS Lower School and the STA libraries by submitting a request form in the NCSU library by 11 a.m. each day. The requested items will be available for pickup at the Upper School Library circulation desk at 3 p.m.

Displays and Contests

Insructional Design
Teachers, if you are planning a new unit, wish to add new information technologies to an old one, or simply want to spice up a standard assignment, see your librarians. We design units and integrate them with the latest bibliographic tools, electronic information, and multimedia resources. They can be for one day, a week, or as long as you need. Stop by or call us for an appointment whenever you have an idea.

Pathfinders
Teachers, the library prepares pathfinders for any subject at your request. Stop by if you are planning a research-based assignment and tell us what you need.

Students, the library has prepared pathfinders (guides to information sources) to help you write major papers or complete assignments in various subjects. They will provide you with a list of subject-related reference works, electronic databases and Internet sites to help you begin your research. If you didn't receive one in the first library research presentation, be sure and ask a librarian for a copy.

Reference Services
Need the answer to a question? Can't find enough materials about a subject? Then stop in anytime or email us to ask for help. We'll do our best to help you find what you need.

Research Paper Counseling
Need help writing a thesis statement, designing an independent study project or finding more materials for an assignment? Stop in the library and get assistance from Dr. Craver.

Speakers, Storytellers and Authors
The library features speakers, storytellers and authors at various times of the year. Recent authors have included Jacqueline Woodson, Gary Blackwood, Gail Carson Levine and Nancy Farmer. See our main page for upcoming and current events.

Web Content Assistance
Teachers, if you need help organizing content and presenting it in a departmental Web page, stop in the library for a consultation. We can help with content, graphics and most importantly, organization of information.
